Our mission

Veterans Outdoor Adventures connects disabled veterans with nature, giving them access and opportunity to experience the therapeutic benefits of outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and archery.

Our veterans

    About us

Veterans Outdoor Adventures was founded by Curt Baumann who was encouraged by Donnie Edwards, founder of The Best Defense Foundation a charitable group for veterans.

Our stated mission is helping disabled veteran get outdoors. We strive to assist veterans that are former hunters but due to physical limitations are no longer able to enjoy the outdoors.

The heart of the foundation is Eric Dyrlund and Jason Brown, two Canton firefighters who lead the team. They design the stands and do the early prep work, saving time once the ever-growing all volunteer crew is onsite.

Curt Baumann and Frank Susskey are always looking for ways to help veterans get back outdoors.

No matter what the disability, Veterans Outdoor Adventures is committed to providing the support needed to get veterans back outdoors after their service to our country.

    Custom hunting blinds

Veterans Outdoor Adventures builds custom hunting blinds that are specifically designed to meet the needs of each veteran. VOA puts each veteran’s safety and comfort first so that they can enjoy the therapeutic benefits of Ohio’s great outdoors and hunt with ease.

Each custom hunting blind is built to meet the specific needs of each individual veteran. The blinds are stand-alone structures and can be outfitted with carpet, heat, furniture, windows and stairs or a ramp based on the needs of the individual.

Veterans Outdoor Adventures efforts serve as a tangible way to demonstrate our commitment to supporting disabled veterans and their families. Providing access to the solace of nature and the thrill of the hunt and helping veterans rediscover their strength and resilience while building a sense of community and camaraderie.

      Testimonials

      Robert Fulton

      Robert Fulton

      Robert Fulton

Vietnam vet, and amputee, Robert Fulton appreciates what VOA has done for him. “I used to sit out on my four-wheeler in all kinds of weather,” he said. “Not anymore. Mine has carpeting, a gas heater, a swivel chair and windows on all sides. They even put a plaque on the door that says, ‘This is dedicated to Robert Fulton, 2nd Class Radar Man, U.S. Navy, Vietnam Veteran.’ I sat in it every day of deer season last year, and I got a deer with my muzzle loader.”

      John Smith

John Smith in Salineville. “He told us he had to quit hunting because he just couldn’t take the cold anymore,” said Curt Baumann. John can now comfortably hunt and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the outdoors again.

      Troy Hershey

      Troy Hershey

Troy, an Air Force veteran who served from 1988-2003, including a tour in Afghanistan following the 9-11 attacks.  Following his military service, Hershey entered the law enforcement field, where he sustained a gunshot wound. In 2015, after undergoing 60 surgeries, his leg had to be amputated.

“It’s amazing,” he said. “For me, it’s been a process to accept that this organization wanted to build this for me. Once I got over the ‘I’m not worthy of this’ feeling, I began to accept it and it truly is awesome.”
